Bicyclists are always at risk on the roads

Of all the people traveling on our roadways - including those in cars, in trucks or even on motorcycles - bicyclists are the ones who are most likely to be the victims of serious injury. In fact, according to statistics reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, bicyclists face a higher risk of crash-related death and injury than other motorists, despite the fact that bicyclists account for only roughly 1 percent of all trips taken in the US.

Even worse, in 2013 alone - the most recent year reported by the CDC - more than 900 cyclists perished in bike-related accidents, with another half million visiting emergency rooms during the same period.

Who is most at risk?

While all bicyclists are at risk every time they strap on their helmets, the CDC has indentified certain age groups that are particularly vulnerable, including:

  • Highest risk of death: Teens and young adults aged 15-29 years, and those adults over the age of 45
  • Highest risk of injury: Children and young adults aged 5-24

However, just because you are at risk doesn't mean there aren't things you can do to improve your safety. For instance, here are some very simply tips to keep you and your family safe while cycling:

  • Always wear a helmet, regardless of age
  • Wear bright, reflective clothing so other motorists can see you
  • Outfit your bike with proper lighting
  • Always ride defensively - after all, you never know what someone in a car will do

No matter the circumstances, you need to do everything you can to ensure your safety, especially given the always-present dangers. However, if you have already been injured in a bike-related accident, it is important to remember that you do have legal options available. Contact an experienced legal professional today to learn what these options may be.
